The brothers of Sigma Chi recognize that we have many blessing in our lives, and it is our responsibility to donate our time helping just causes and those who are less fortunate. Our brothers are involved in a wide range of community service that benefits William & Mary, Williamsburg and the greater community. In addition, we have participated in almost every Greek philanthropy, fielded the winning team for Alpha Chi Olympics and Gamma Phi Moonball and won Chi Omega’s Karaoke for the third year running. As leaders on this campus, part of Sigma Chi’s reputation has benefited from our support of other Greek philanthropies, as well as our individual member’s personal commitment to community service. Sigma Chi prides itself on developing leaders; an excellent opportunity for many members to develop leadership skills has been through involvement on campus in leadership roles as project heads or organizers for community service, as well as, coaches in our Derby Days. Sigma Chi sets the bar for many activities in the Greek community and service is no exception. It is essential for us to assist and help all those in need in any way possible whether it includes participating in various tutoring programs or philanthropic groups.
Our annual Derby Days philanthropy raises money for Children’s Miracle Network, and once again we raised thousands of dollars as one of the largest most successful philanthropic events at William & Mary. This year we received note from our campus newspaper as being an example to the rest of the campus for the success of Derby Days. Articles in two different newspapers, as well as, a feature on William & Mary T.V. have shown the Zeta Upsilon Chapter to be leading philanthropic endeavors with Derby Days success this year. Derby Days has a variety of events including t-shirt sales, a participant dinner, an auction, and a presentation by a representative from Children’s Miracle Network. Additionally, to keep participants excited about Derby Days and give our campus an exciting week, we host a Skit Night, Lip Sync Contest, and kick-off Barbecue which all saw very high popularity. By raising so much money, and showing the participants a great time while they help us assist CMN, the college community realizes that Sigma Chi serves as a social outlet, as well as, a powerful tool to better both the college and the general community.
Additionally, Sigma Chi’s have very active involvements in community service including project head for Adopt-A-Highway at William & Mary, tutoring coaching local middle schools, and involvement in the Alan Buzkin Memorial Bone Marrow Drive. This Bone Marrow Drive is the largest on any college campus, the drive was started by Brother Jay Buzkin (’92) in an effort to find a match for his younger brother Alan. This has resulted in strong commitment in the organization by Sigma Chi brothers throughout the years as members of the Drive’s Executive Committee and volunteers for the drive. Brothers also spent Spring Break on a service trip with Habitat for Humanity to Charleston South Carolina.
